PRESS STATEMENT BY THE COALITION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (CNG) IN RETALIATION TO FALSE INSINUATIONS MADE BY NANS AGAINST SHAMSUDDEEN BALA MOHAMMED

The Coalition of Nigerian Students (CNG) finds it necessary to address the recent statement issued by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Senate President, which unjustly attacked Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed for his legitimate observations regarding Seyi Tinubu’s so-called philanthropic activities.

While philanthropy is commendable, it is equally important to ensure that it does not become a smokescreen for governance failures or a tool for political branding. We reject the attempts by certain individuals to misrepresent the concerns raised by Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed, who spoke in the best interest of Nigerian youths and good governance.

Shamsudeen Bala Muhammad is a visionary youth advocate dedicated to empowering young people through active inclusion in governance, economic development, and skills acquisition. He believes youth are not only the future but the driving force of today, and he has used his influence to secure political appointments for them as commissioners, advisers, and directors, while also championing policies that promote youth leadership. Beyond politics, he supports vocational training, entrepreneurship, scholarships, and employment opportunities, helping youth gain financial independence and professional success. His goal is to create a society where young people are self-reliant, innovative, and central to national development. Through his unwavering efforts, he continues to inspire a new generation of leaders who are shaping a prosperous and progressive future.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
1. Government Responsibility vs. Private Philanthropy
The argument that Seyi Tinubu, a private individual, should be left unchallenged in his acts of “altruism” overlooks a critical point: Nigeria is governed by democratic institutions, not individuals acting out of personal goodwill. Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed rightly questioned why a private citizen, rather than elected officials, is at the forefront of addressing socio-economic issues that are fundamentally the responsibility of government.

2. Shamsudeen’s Track Record on Youth Empowerment
Contrary to the baseless insinuations by NANS, Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed has been actively involved in youth empowerment, education, and economic development in Bauchi State:
Over 1,000 youths have benefitted from skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs initiated under his mentorship.
Active engagement of youths into governance.
The Bauchi State Youth and Women Economic Empowerment Program has provided interest-free loans and vocational training to thousands.
Shamsudeen has made significant investments in ICT hubs, innovation centers, and employment-generation projects to equip young people with 21st-century skills.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Bauchi Axis honored Engr. Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed with an Award of Excellence in Youth Development in recognition of his significant contributions to empowering Nigerian youth through education, skills development, and career advancement. The award, accepted on his behalf by Adamu Dauda Yashi during a ceremony in Bauchi, celebrated Engr. Mohammed’s lasting impact on youth in Bauchi and across Nigeria. Yashi emphasized the need for continued support for youth, highlighting the award as a call to action for all stakeholders. NANS praised Engr. Mohammed’s dedication, noting his work as an inspiration and a vital force in national development.

These are tangible interventions, not mere rhetoric. If critics wish to discuss youth empowerment, they should first acknowledge the measurable impact of Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed’s policies.

3. The Misrepresentation of Shamsuddeen’s Position
It is disingenuous for NANS to claim that Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed seeks to "shift responsibility" from the government. His comments were never against philanthropy but rather a call for structural solutions to Nigeria’s deep-rooted socio-economic issues. Charity is not a substitute for governance—a point that any well-meaning Nigerian should support.

4. The Danger of Political Propaganda Masquerading as Philanthropy
While philanthropy is welcome, Nigerians must be cautious when it becomes a carefully orchestrated public relations campaign to mask governance deficiencies. The selective distribution of relief materials, accompanied by heavy media coverage, raises valid concerns about intent. A truly selfless act does not seek validation through political grandstanding.

5. NANS’ Selective Criticism
The most troubling aspect of NANS’ statement is its glaring hypocrisy and political bias. While rushing to defend Seyi Tinubu, NANS has remained silent on pressing student-related issues, such as:
The rising cost of education, making university access more difficult.
The unemployment crisis affecting graduates across the country.

Instead of acting as an independent voice for students, NANS appears to have been hijacked by political interests, prioritizing the defense of the President’s son over the real concerns of Nigerian students.

CONCLUSION
The Coalition of Nigerian Students (CNG) stands firmly behind Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed. His comments were not only justified but reflect the frustrations of Nigerian youths who demand systemic solutions, not temporary handouts.

We urge NANS to realign itself with its core mission—advocating for students—rather than becoming a political mouthpiece. Furthermore, we call on all well-meaning Nigerians to focus on policies and sustainable reforms rather than engaging in personality-driven distractions.

Signed,

Comrade Bitrus Samuel,
Press Secretary,
Coalition of Nigerian Students (CNG),
